    Hi there.
What are the criteria to become a chessboxer?
I have plenty of martial arts experience and have been playing chess since I was a nipper, and this sounds like a good laugh.
Hope to hear from you soon,
    Kind regards,
    JJ

    Hi JJ,

Chessboxers compete at all levels from novice through to expert, depending on background, experience and training. If you can play chess and have some martial arts experience you’ve already got a good grounding. We have trained people for competition who started with no chess or boxing background at all – and some with lots of both. The main criteria for chessboxing are simply the desire and willingness to improve your skills.

Hi Anthony, You have a good chance to become a leading chessboxer. If you are based in London come to a complimentary training class one Saturday morning and see how you like the club.

    Hi,

I’m Brazilian chess International Master Luis Coelho, I’m 31 years old and I recently got interested in chess-boxing.

I have a background in two martial arts (karate and judo, plus some experience in kickboxing from my teenage years) and I’ve now been practicing boxing for a few months.

I read and watched a bunch of exciting stuff online about this brand-new world of chess-boxing, until I read at the official chess website of the international federation that a chess-boxer must be 35 years old or younger in order to compete! Is this for real?!?! Because if so that would imply that the Klitschko brothers, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would be classified as unfit for chess-boxing, the same to be said about chess World Champion Vishy Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov and current World Championship runner-up Boris Gelfand.

So, as exciting as this whole thing looks, I would need some clarification on this issue before I even get started, because I of course I’d need to have the promise of a certain longevity in the sport.

    Best regards,
    IM Luis Coelho

      Hi Luis,

London Chessboxing shows are no longer part of the WCBO but instead affiliated to the World Chess Boxing Association. There is NO upper age limit for taking part in a WCBA chessboxing fight.

You would be welcome to compete in one of our upcoming shows – and we wish you all the best with your Chessboxing training.

      All the best,

      LCB
